Teletherapy
What is teletherapy?
Teletherapy (also known as telepractice, telehealth, or telemedicine) is the process of providing therapy services using telecommunications technology. At Pathway Therapy Specialists, we have the ability to provide our individualized speech, language, myofunctional, or feeding therapy sessions in real-time using a secure video conferencing system for appropriate clients within the state of Virginia.
Teletherapy is a great option for those who would prefer to remain at home for their sessions due to COVID-19 concerns, for children to still be able to attend sessions on bad-weather days or when a sibling is sick, and for families who would prefer to avoid long commutes for therapy.
Prior to initiating teletherapy sessions, we will work with you to determine whether your child is a candidate for teletherapy and to discuss procedures and requirements. We have found that teletherapy sessions are very effective in teaching new skills, promoting carryover to the home environment, and increasing families’ involvement in their child’s therapy plan.
Will teletherapy work for my child?
We have found that teletherapy sessions are effective in targeting the therapeutic goals for most children! We use a secure videoconferencing platform that allows the therapist and client to see and interact with each other in real-time — similar to Facetime or Zoom. Far from simply plopping a toddler in front of a computer screen and expecting them to “figure it out,” teletherapy with your therapist at Pathway may involve parent coaching, interactive crafts or games, and individualized activities targeting your child’s goals. If you're unsure of whether teletherapy would be a good fit for your child, please give us a call to schedule your free 20-minute consultation and we’ll come up with a plan that works for your family.
Positive aspects of teletherapy sessions that we have noted include: Increased carryover of learned skills because the child is learning them in the home environment, improved confidence for parents due to the opportunity to participate and be involved in their child’s sessions, and of course the convenience of having sessions in the comfort of your own home!
What do I need for a successful teletherapy session?
For a successful teletherapy session, you’ll need a high-speed internet connection, computer or tablet like an iPad or Kindle Fire, a parent or other adult available to assist during the session, a cellphone nearby so we can get in touch in case of disconnections, and any materials recommended for the session by your therapist. We recommend that, if possible, sessions take place in a quiet room with comfortable seating and a table.
